FYI – “Skin is the window to the body’s overall health”

An individual’s skin type is primarily based on how much oil is produced in the follicles. Generally, an individual’s skin becomes drier over time. Skin types include dry, normal, combination or oily. Sensitive skin is considered a condition and acne is considered a disorder. All skin types need proper cleansing, exfoliating and hydrating.


1. Dry Skin

  • lacks natural oil secretions that protect us from environmental damage and aging
  • follicles are usually small
  • While common for someone with dry skin, dehydration is a condition that can be seen on all skin types. Dehydrated skin lacks water. This is different from dry skin that lacks oil. Drinking plenty of water and hydrating the skin with moisturizers can help minimize the effects of dryness and dehydration.

2. Normal Skin 

  • has a good oil/water balance
  • follicles are a normal size and the skin is usually free of blemishes
  • maintenance and preventative care is the goal for this type of skin

3. Combination Skin

  • both oily and dry at the same time
  • pore size changes from larger to medium just outside the T-zone on the cheeks next to the nose
  • deep cleansing and regular exfoliation help to keep the skin clear and blemishes minimal

4. Oily Skin

  • characterized by excess oil production
  • pore size is larger over most of the face
  • requires more cleansing and exfoliating than other skin types. However, over cleansing can make matters worse. If the skin is over dried, it is not balanced and the body’s protection mechanism tries to produce additional oil to compensate for the dryness on the surface.


  • Preventative measures for skin care include avoiding the sun and wearing sunscreen.
  • Proper home care, skin treatments and ingredients such as antioxidants, lipids and AHAs can be beneficial.
  • A good diet, vitamins, water intake and exercise all have a positive effect on our health and our complexion.
